Hello! My name is Angelina, and I’ve just graduated from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor’s Degree in English, Media Studies, and Creative Writing. I spent the better part of my formative years performing on a stage — conventionally and unconventionally. I grew up as a ballerina, never even having the chance to develop stage fright after I was put on a stage in a tutu at four years old; I trained as a flutist for my school’s symphony orchestra, having developed a penchant for classical music in my years of ballet; I recited opening statements in San Diego Superior Court as a mock trial attorney — on the defense team, of course; I gave countless speeches in front of peers and mentors as Student Body President, from leading protests to addressing my senior class on the graduation stage; and I appeared on the student news every Monday morning to deliver the very important announcements of what we were serving for lunch in the cafe and how the sports teams were faring this season. All of this to say, I recognized from early on that a part of me will always be drawn to performance and the stories that inspire it. Performance is art being created in real time, with live bodies, and a whole artistic process existing in the prior. It’s forever living and breathing, immediate and transitory in its enactment yet enduring in its memory. The palpability is in the transmission — what lies in the space between me and you — and it is a beautiful, ephemeral high that I seek to cultivate in every creative act I do.
As I was always someone with an affinity for a good sentence and a craving for my next best read, I knew I wanted to apply my love for literature and writing towards my devotion to performance. When I took my experiences with me to UC Berkeley, my dance career became a hobby while I nurtured my passion for English and creative writing. My love for stories transcends the written word, and so I brought an interdisciplinary perspective to every class discussion and essay prompt, applying what we learn on the page to other narrative art forms and, in turn, the world around us. The questions of literature that have always been of interest to me — mainly those of voice, authorship, perspective, and memory — can be fascinatingly applied to those of performance and other narrative art forms — dealing with ephemerality, adaptation, and what transforms a story when it’s enacted. After deciding to pursue honors for my English degree and take on an undergraduate thesis, the topics I wanted to explore dealt with this same interdisciplinary perspective, and after I saw The Great Gatsby musical in London — a story that has always remained close to my heart — I knew it would be the perfect, full-circle magnum opus for my time at Berkeley. “The Political Imaginary and Performance: The Great Gatsby through Adaptations” is my proudest labor of love, and the result of a final semester with one too many energy drinks and no sleep.
I’ve just finished my role of Engagement Writer with Cal Performances, Berkeley’s premier performing arts organization, and am excited to pursue future opportunities that similarly allow me to blend artistry and innovation with a growing capacity for wonder and emphasis on human connection. In my professional career, I’ve written feature articles on performing artists and season announcements, interviewed inspiring creatives, copyedited student publications, assisted in community outreach for nonprofit arts programs, and evaluated nonfiction submissions for a global arts & politics magazine. What has captivated me through it all is being a part of other people’s creative journeys; people are windows to new worlds, and I have always been an explorer.
Aside from my professional experience, I’ve had a number of odd jobs and countless stories from them. My notes app and commonplace journal are filled with fragmented thoughts that may never see the light of day, but serve as an archive to pull from for every piece I write. I’ll talk your ear off about my study abroad experience in London and show you the pictures I’m proudest of in my travels across 16 different countries during that time. I like to make scrapbooks and collages, though I’ve forayed into many different kinds of crafts after getting inspired from the aisles in Micheal’s or raiding my mom’s craft closet. Every room I’ve lived in is a gallery of my life, its own moment in time, and I probably spend more time in the planning than in the actual decorating.
I’ve always seen people as their own individual work of art — shaped by their own doing and the environment around them — and I have dedicated my life to studying that art form.
